Get Rid of Junk and Reclaim Your Basement Space

Thinking about converting your basement into something more than storage space? Basements are great spaces to turn into something more for your family home. They make great game rooms, home theaters or even a spare bedroom. Then again, maybe you just want to get rid of all the junk you’ve been saving for years.

Regardless of the reasons, cleaning out a cluttered basement is a chore. Depending on how much, it could take a lot of hauling and organizing to get everything in order. Here are a few tips to make the job a little easier.

Take Inventory

If you’re just starting your basement cleanup project, it’s a good idea to step back and take inventory of everything you have. Once you start digging through all of your old belongings, you’ll likely encounter many belongings you completely forgot about. Taking an inventory of everything you have from the start helps you brainstorm ideas about what should come next for your old belongings.

Unless you’re on a strict timetable, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to properly inventory everything. If you encounter some sentimental items that you’re unsure what to do with, you may want to break away from your project to truly decide what you want to do with it. Basements don’t simply hold things—they hold memories too!

Organize Your Belongings Into Sections

Once you have a solid inventory of what’s in your basement, you can start thinking about what it is you want to do with everything. Maybe you’ve found that you have enough stuff to have a rummage sale. Or maybe you have a set of keepsakes that you want to move into a storage shed.

At this point, assuming you have the necessary space to shuffle things around a bit, you’ll want to separate your belongings into sections. A corner for trash, a corner for the rummage sale, a corner for storage, and so on. This also helps you figure out what you want to do with your treasured items—you might find that the box of old china keeps bouncing between the “sell” and “storage” pile.

Dump the Trash

Basement cleanups unavoidably produce a lot of garbage. Old folding lawn chairs that have long since lost their ability to unfold, broken appliances and that bright orange shag carpet you bought three decades ago. You’ll have a lot to get rid of.

Consider renting a bin for this part of your cleanup. It’ll save you a lot of time and effort in cleaning things out. You can park it in your driveway and take all the old junk up and dump it in without worrying about sorting it or wondering if the weekly garbage guys will pick it up. Shag carpet included.

Make the Most of Your Basement
